Chemical laboratory and R&D department
The chemical laboratory of Ecology Services is the foundation of the process of waste treatment and recycling, as this is where the preliminary sorting process is carried out.
This is also where the routing of the different kinds of waste is performed for treatment at the transition depot, reuse, recycling, exporting or transporting to another licensed end site.
In addition to that, the laboratory serves as a research and development center of innovative technologies for waste management. Our chemical laboratory is run and supervised by the company’s chemists.
The processes carried out in the laboratory
During the preliminary sorting and screening process constitute the waste are identified and separated into hazardous and non-hazardous materials each treated differently. Each material has a different recycling feasibility and the recyclable materials are sorted in such a way that they can be fully utilized. For example sludge (a byproduct of industrial processes or of sewage treatment) is sorted into organic sludge (containing paint, oil or some organic solvent) and inorganic sludge (containing mostly metals). By using advanced recycling technologies it is possible to turn the sludge into raw materials or fuel, so that it can be transformed. The sludge undergoes drying, filtering and restoring organic solvents processes and becomes a product in its own right which can be exported as recycled raw material or as fuel for heating/energy generation (transduction). The chemical laboratory’s instruments estimate the various characteristics of the materials, such as their pH level, caloric value, their drying feasibility , the solution’s normality , the level of oxidants and more. Following these tests the materials may be designated to the various treatment processes with maximum efficiency.
Research and development
The chemical laboratory of Ecology Services spearheads the research and development of recycling and industrial waste treatment technologies. The laboratory develops instruments and materials that enhance the system of waste management, increase utilization and clean the environment of hazardous materials that would otherwise go to landfills and pollute the environment. When required, the laboratory’s chemists can provide a professional R & D solution to factories in need of waste management and help them plan the appropriate stages of handling and transportation. The laboratory helps to realize our vision for a greener, cleaner future every single day.
